Kinesiologist

Kinesiology is defined as the scientific study of human movement. It is a multi-disciplinary science encompassing four primary areas of study:

  1. Anatomy
  2. Biomechanics
  3. Physiology
  4. Psychomotor Behaviour

Kinesiology studies the structure, function and movement of the human body and its application to foster human health and wellness through research, prevention, assessment, and intervention in work, exercise, sport, recreation, and rehabilitation.

Kinesiologists apply kinesiology to the study and evaluation of human movement and functional motor performance.

The kinesiologist is able to assist in many aspects of clinical care, rehabilitation, wellness programs, and health education.

As a Kinesiologist, I can bridge the divide between rehabilitation and fitness. In conjunction with other healthcare professionals, I can assist in the design, implementation and management of exercise, physical activity and appropriate lifestyle programs for individuals following treatment or rehabilitation for clinically documented chronic disease, musculoskeletal injury and/or disability.

Programs include:

  • Strengthening
  • Physical Conditioning
  • Proprioceptive training
  • Improving range of motion
  • Neuromuscular re-education
  • Balancing extremity strength
  • Increasing muscular endurance
  • Increasing cardiovascular function

Rehabilitation/ Exercise Therapy

  • Perform job demands analysis and functional evaluation testing
  • Design, develop and monitor exercise, rehabilitation and conditioning programs
  • Rehabilitation program assessment, review and management

Active Health and Fitness

  • Design and conduct individual health and wellness programs
  • Teach and organize courses/workshops in health promotion including fitness, nutrition and wellness issues

Older adults, individuals who are physically challenged, athletes, youth, individuals who have a history of heart problems, arthritis, diabetes and persons with health risks or musculo-skeletal problems can make use of the services of a Kinesiologist.

Certified Exercise Physiologist (CEP)

The CSEP-CEP (Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology- Certified Exercise Physiologist) performs assessments/evaluations, prescribes conditioning exercise, provides exercise supervision/monitoring, counseling, healthy lifestyle education, and outcome evaluation for "apparently healthy" individuals and/or populations with medical conditions, functional limitations or disabilities through the application of physical activity/exercise, for the purpose of improving health, function and work or sport performance.

The CSEP-CEP is the most advanced health and fitness practitioner certification in Canada allowing members to work with high performance athletes, the general population (across the lifespan), and varied clinical populations.

CSEP-CEP Scope of Practice

A CSEP-CEP is sanctioned by CSEP to:

  1. Administer appropriate assessment protocols for the evaluation of physical fitness to individuals who have been screened, signed an informed consent form and/or who have been cleared for unrestricted or restricted activity by a licensed health care professional.
  2. Give physical activity/exercise clearance following further queries to positive responses to questions 4, 5 and 7 on the PAR-Q. For example, an individual could be cleared for physical activity/exercise by a CSEP-CEP if: (i) in question 4 it was determined that the dizziness was associated with over breathing during heavy exercise or sudden postural changes, (ii) in question 5 it was determined that the joint problem was an old knee, ankle, shoulder or other old joint constraint and (iii) in question 7 it was determined that the individual had a "cold" or relative contraindication such as, but not limited to, controlled diabetes or stable medicated blood pressure.
  3. Give physical activity clearance to clients over age 69 or clients who are screened out by PAR-Q questions 1 and 6. In these instances, until additional information is gathered, the CSEP-CEP can recommend tailored, low intensity, progressive physical activity (such as walking).
  4. Interpret the results of an individual's fitness assessment to determine the individualÕs health-related fitness level and/or performance-related (Function and Work or Sport) fitness level.
  5. Use the outcomes from objective assessments to guide decisions regarding physical activity/exercise: prescription, demonstration, supervision and monitoring, fitness and healthy lifestyle counseling and act as a personal trainer.
  6. Suggest healthy dietary practices in concert with physical activity/exercise programs for healthy weight management.
  7. Suggest dietary practices for health-related nutrition and performance-related nutrition.
  8. Use a heart rhythm tracing to observe heart response during a fitness assessment and a structured exercise session.
  9. Evaluate and treat both asymptomatic and symptomatic populations with medical conditions, functional limitations and disabilities, through the application of exercise and physical activity, for the purpose of improving health and function.
  10. Perform evaluations, prescribe conditioning exercise, and provide exercise supervision, health education and outcome evaluation.
  11. Work with apparently healthy asymptomatic and symptomatic populations such as older adults, children and youth, and obstetric populations, and to society as a whole, in health enhancement and the prevention of impairment and disability.
  12. Provide appropriate exercise therapy to clients including, but not limited to, those with musculoskeletal, cardio-respiratory, and metabolic conditions.
  13. Accept referrals from licensed health care professionals trained to diagnose and treat musculoskeletal conditions and/or medical conditions.

A CSEP-CEP is not sanctioned by CSEP to:

  1. Administer assessment protocols and prescribe exercise and/or therapy to acutely injured and diseased individuals who are not within the boundaries of the above scope of practice.
  2. Diagnose pathology based on any assessment performed.

Sport Conditioning Specialist (SCS)

The Sport Conditioning Specialist (SCS) is offered through Twist Conditioning and Can-Fit-Pro. The SCS combines current research and practical exercises to improve sport balance, sport strength, and sport movement, and gives coaches, trainers, rehabilitation specialist and teachers an opportunity to apply the same principles and techniques used to prevent injury and improve performance for thousands of successful athletes. It is understood that the nature of sport and daily life requires coordinated movement, full body strength, balance and overall enhanced mechanics to reduce the chance of injury and improve performance of the human body. Sport conditioning captures the secondary characteristics of fitness (balance, agility, coordination, power, speed and reaction) and helps children, adults, athletes, and weekend warriors move with greater efficiency and effectiveness. Sport conditioning has a direct application to enhancing the athletic experience and provides a great opportunity for athletes of all ages to be more successful in sports with this conditioning. This training methodology is also very applicable within the fitness experience (group and personalized) as well as in a teaching and rehabilitation setting to build on the basics of fitness and develop enhanced movement for everyone.
